Newsletter Feature from Quill Pinpoint: Auto enrolment pensions: 5 reasons to outsource your payroll

General Information

  • Outsourcing is the subject of a Law Society Practice Note of 29th April 2015. It provides an overview of outsourcing, with examples of outsourcing activities, and other relevant information on confidentiality, management of your practice and risk assessment

  • Cloud Computing is the subject of a Law Society Practice note issued on 7th April 2014. This covers the benefits and risks of using cloud computing and includes ways in which a contract can try to protect the user against particular types of risk. Interestingly, one of the risks (described in section 6.3) is the risk of foreign governments or intelligence agencies gaining access to your data - lawfully. It says, comfortingly, that "The Information Commissioner's guidance on the use of cloud computing makes clear that where this occurs enforcement under the DPA against a data controller is unlikely." So you can sleep easy.

  • The Cloud Industry Forum (CIF) was established in 2009 to provide transparency through certification to a Code of Practice for credible online Cloud service providers and to assist end users in determining core information necessary to enable them to adopt these services. It is a not for profit company limited by guarantee, and is an industry body that champions and advocates the adoption and use of Cloud-based services by businesses and individuals. They provide a Code of Practice that provides transparency of Cloud services such that consumers can have clarity and confidence in their choice of provider. There is a list (with useful details) of certified organisations and also a list of organisations currently undergoing certification. Lawcloud and e-know.net (see below for more) have already been certified.
