In the January/February issue, I described the different types of case tracking available, varying from the client being sent a simple email when a milestone is reached, through the provision of fixed format reports on a daily basis, up to the client being able to query the case management system in real time to prepare reports on the matters being handled.
Broadly speaking, the complexity of the system, and the potential problems with security, become correspondingly more difficult as you move through this categorisation, and only the larger firms have the IT resources to manage their own file server, associated online client and matter data base, and real time querying programs.

In each of these case studies, the heading includes first the name of the software supplier and then the firm providing the case study, together with the author.
For the printed version, where space is limited, I chose case studies from DPS, eastconvey and SellersLink, where the supplier manages the website containing the client reports and where the firm, therefore, is largely free from the problem of security which is otherwise a major issue with this type of system. In some cases, with systems of this kind, the firms concerned do not have an IT department at all but rely on the supplier to look after the technical side of the system.
