These pages provide information on the major directories of expert witnesses in the UK. The organisations covering all specialities are placed first in this list, and the more specialised ones follow.

The online directory of UK expert witnesses

  • ExpertSearch.co.uk provides the largest online register of UK expert witnesses, containing over 4,500 profiles, an online database (searchable by name, town, county, region, qualification and/or area of expertise) a unique email directory containing the email addresses of over 3,000 UK expert witnesses and over 1,600 links to UK expert witness home pages (i.e. where the expert witnesses have their own web sites). The directory contains photographs and location maps and is updated twice daily throughout the year.

  • The Legal Hub is the new home of Sweet & Maxwell's Expert Witness Directory. There are 2,600 experts listed in the Directory which can also be searched by name, region or specialisation. It says on the site that all expert witnesses have been vetted and have agreed to abide by a strict Code of Practice and Terms and Conditions.

  • There is also an overlapping directory for Scottish Experts - The Law Society of Scotland Directory of Expert Witnesses. This comprehensive source of expert witnesses in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland is published jointly between The Law Society of Scotland and W. Green. All Expert Witnesses on this site have provided two professional references from practising solicitors or advocates who have instructed them within the last three years.

  • Expert Witness established in 1996, publish and distribute The Expert Witness Directory; a completely free service to the legal, insurance and media professions available in four formats:
    1. A4 Hard Copy Directory
    2. Real time updateable CD-ROM, which also updates from the website
    3. This Website
    4. Telephone service "SearchLine" which sources Expert Witnesses from any discipline within 6 working hours.
    There are separate annual directories in book form covering the UK, Ireland, Scotland, Australia & New Zealand; all of these are included on the CD-ROM and Website.

  • UK Register of Expert Witnesses from JS Publications. First published in 1988, this is the longest established independent listing of vetted independent witnesses, all of whom have been recommended by previously instructing solicitors. The full Register of some 3,200 experts is available online as a fully searchable Web Register, which is updated on a regular basis, and there are some 20,000 terms of reference which can be selected to aid in a detailed search. The search facility is free to use, though you will need to register a password in order to do so, and there are links to experts own web sites. There is also information about how to use expert witnesses and how to become one.

  • X-Pro is designed and maintained by practising UK barristers. Experts have access to their own full page profile allowing instantaneous updates, so the details are always current. Profiles feature postcode and qualification hyperlinks and in many cases an audio 'soundbite', recorded by the experts themselves. There is also a 'Helpdesk' facility which offers assistance for lawyers in choosing an expert. X-Pro is the brainchild of Andrew C David, an experienced barrister of 20 years' call, and a small group of colleagues.

  • The Academy of Experts provides a register of Experts and Qualified Dispute Resolvers. This can be searched by discipline and by geographic area.

  • Legal Experts UK offer a wide range of Expert Witnesses and Legal Experts in many categories of expertise. Experts and Expert Witnesses are listed under their relevant fields of expertise which is indexed alphabetically (expert lists).

  • WitnessDirectory.com, established over 12 years ago, offers lawyers a free source of expert witnesses. The directory reconciles lawyers from around the world with expert witnesses from the UK, US and Australia. Hundreds of visitors a day peruse the directory from as many as 40 countries.

  • Medical Experts Online provide information on 3000 UK Medical Expert Witnesses. They also give solicitors, insurers and medical experts the ability to create and manage their own database of experts on the Medical Experts Online site. Experts have access to their own online profiles which are automatically and instantly updated on the web and on all the data bases of the solicitors and insurers who host their own lists on the site.

  • Directory of Expert Witnesses provided by the British Psychological Society contains profiles of around 1,000 UK-based psychologists who offer their services in the expert witness field'

  • The RICS Expert Witness Registration Scheme (EWRS) is a voluntary scheme that sets the standards for chartered surveyors who act as expert witnesses in the UK. Topics covered include land, property and construction matters.

  • Detectives UK provides a large number of investigators, grouped by region.

  • Earth's Environmental Experts (3E) Database, with experts in many environmental and ecological specialisms. The 3E Database is a searchable database, not just a listing of expertise. From June 2000, membership of the 3E database is free, provided that people join online. From the point of view of the user, the search continues to be free, online, although you can ask the organisation to do the search for you, in which case a charge is made.

  • Green MedicoLegal Ltd is a database of Medical Expert Witnesses set up by Dr Ben Green, designed to assist lawyers with personal injury and medical malpractice and clinical negligence cases. Although based in the UK, the register also includes experts in other countries.
